Style Savvy

Season Must Haves

The surest way to vamp up that wardrobe of yours is to adorn it with some standout jewelry. Basic classics in your closet are the perfect canvas for bold statement pieces that can transform that little black dress into a where-did-you-get-that look. Coco Chanel eloquently put it: "In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different." There’s no better way to beat mediocrity than with personal adornment. Any one of these style makers can straddle the fence between casual and fabulous. To be on message this season, JFYI picked our favorite jewelry Must Haves you can’t be without. Figure it this way each jewel can transform at least a handful of looks in your closet. Think of all the money you’ll save on new clothes…

Statement Necklaces are the hottest looks for fall and well into next year. Big beads, fabulous clusters of giant gems or crystals, and pick-me pendants in faceted or rough form, or a mixture of both, are all the rage. With textile embellishment such a huge trend, these necklaces can transform the neckline of any basic top or dress—turning a nice to an Oh My God! Keep in mind several layers of moderate sized pieces achieve the same big look.

Pearls, Pearls, Pearls are a classic with contemporary style. If only Coco Chanel were still alive, she’d have a field day with all the types, colors, sizes and shapes that are available. There is truly something for every taste and budget. Ultra long opera lengths, ala Coco, are on trend, either knee sweeping or wrapped in multiple strands. Women are also layering necklaces of different types and lengths, and adding beads and chain link pieces to the mix.

Large Chain Links are arresting in warm yellow and lustrous rose gold. Gold chain today is far from ordinary, more heavily entrenched in design in the mixing of link types, shapes (circle, disk, oval, bolo, heart, and flower), and sizes; textures, from polished to matte to hammered; and use of other metals and materials like enamel, gems, pearls, Murano glass, wood, leather, and rubber.

Big, Gem Cocktail Rings have given the rest of our digits, besides our ring fingers, something to celebrate. And, there are some amazing pieces set with yummy colored gemstones, many of which come from the quartz family like amethyst, citrine, rock crystal, or smoky, rose, lemon, green, and milky quartz. Go for one large center stone or designs that mix gems or sprinkle pavé.

Cuff Bracelets are today’s wonder woman accessory. These power bracelets can make a bold statement on one or both wrists in designs that are as varied as the people who wear them, from gem encrusted to open and woven.

Stackable Bangles are a red carpet favorite in a variety of metals, with or without gems, even flaunting interesting texture and finish. Widths vary as well, but the name of the game is stack ‘em and stack ‘em high.  This boho chic look has yet to be off trend. And, bangles work well mixed with other bracelet types.

Hoop Earrings continue to cause quite the hoopla, particularly in larger sizes. But these hoops are more than just round circles looped from your ear lobes. Designs are more intricate—in organic shapes, additions of pavé inside and out, multiple hoops linked together, and hanging charms and gemstones.

Brooches: We can’t seem to say enough about them. JFYI writers always get a bit miffed when we see brooches on those proverbial “what’s out” lists. Yes, gauchos may come and go, but when you’re talking about better fashion and fine jewelry you’d be hard pressed to come up with many ousted candidates. Brooches, as we’ve said before, are one of those adaptable pieces that work on just about everything—on hats, shoes and hand bags; in your hair; tacked to neck and backlines; at the hip, cleavage and shoulder; as a belt buckle or button; gathering up fabric; connected to necklaces and bracelets…need we go on?
