Moonrise Jewelry, Inc. recruits and trains local underprivileged women to handcraft colorful, nature-inspired designs in its local studio in Cheriton, Virginia and a women’s cooperative in Mexico This women-owned and operated company—co-founded by artisans Liz Watson and Meredith Restein—has created a social enterprise focused on community development, ethical sourcing and environmental stewardship embodied in organic jewelry designs made with recycled, renewable, and fair trade components like Wyoming green jade, Mesa Verde peridot, Oregon opals, and Nevada purple sage chalcedony and sterling silver, even natural orchids preserved in resin. The Moonrise founders believe that fashion is at its best when it’s both stylish and sustainable (moonrisejewelry.com).

Lucina, named after the Roman goddess of light and birth, is a Portland, Oregon company that connects American designers with developing-world artisans to create indulgently chic jewelry. The concept was developed in 2004 by Shauna Alexander Mohr after the birth of her daughter to create a meaningful business collaborating with women and families in developing and war-torn countries. That mission came to life through Lucina Jewelry, named after the Roman goddess of light and birth. Benefiting women in need—including once victims of war in Afghanistan, at-risk youth and single moms in Colombia, and genocide survivors in Rwanda—to create designs that unexpectedly blendnatural, lustrous elements like smooth tagua toggles, hoops and beads and polished coffee-colored algarrobo seeds from the rainforest with luminous citrine, warm garnet and lustrous freshwater pearls. Silhouettes are long, flowing, multi-layered and bold. Handcrafted sterling silver and gold-fill beads and chains further distinguish the collection’s chic-with-soul look (lucinacompany.com).

Lori Bonn, an Oakland, California-based designer known for mixing colorful gemstones and sterling silver in bold silhouettes with intricate detailing, is aggressively pursuing her Clear Conscience Jewelry™ initiative committed to sourcing and production that is socially and environmentally responsible. As part of this philosophy, one she hopes will catch on industry-wide, she launched Chrysalis, her first collection to mix fair manufacturing and recycled metals (50% recycled silver from post industrial sources, with 100%post consumer content planned for the future) with verifiable/traceable gems mined and cut with people and the planet in mind. As this issue continues to build momentum, we can expect to see and hear more from Lori Bonn. (loribonn.com or clearconsciencejewelry.org).
