Every year, from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, I relish in my holiday traditions of baking, decorating and shopping for gifts and, of course, things for me to wear to all those festive gatherings. But this year, like most Americans, I feel the squeeze of a tightening economy nudging me to pull those purse strings in rather than out (a reflex that’s not as familiar). I told my eight-year-old son not to expect lots of gifts under the tree this year because he is older and the items he wants are more expensive. He said, “Don’t worry, mom. I’ll just ask Santa to bring the ones that cost the most.” He didn’t believe my retort that Mr. Claus is on a budget, too. He reminded me that it’s all in the magic.

That got me thinking of how cash-strapped shoppers like me and you can create some holiday magic without having to burden old Kris Kringle with extra requests this year. I admit, upfront, that my bias for jewelry will shine through in my advice — but for good reason. Jewelry not only satisfies the fashion lover’s soul, it also makes a meaningful and memorable gift, and, in many cases, can benefit a charitable cause in the process — making it a feel good purchase for all involved! So, take heed:

Partygoers can resurrect that little black dress from last year and show it off again this year, may be even several times, just by changing up the jewelry adorning this classic canvas. You can’t go wrong by investing in some bejeweled standouts to transform your look. A pair of interesting hoops or colorful gem drops hanging from the ears, a sparkling statement stone bib to alter that neckline, and a brilliantly bawdy brooch worn as a belt buckle can make over one dress three times. Whether you buy fine jewelry or fashion pieces that offer the look for less, choose the best quality you can find for your budget.

Gift givers aiming to please will not disappoint with jewelry. Unless you know the person’s ring size, most gifters opt for earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Diamonds, pearls and birthstone gems are all classic choices. Charms that reflect hobbies, talisman and iconic symbols of enlightenment can personalize a piece. Timeless gold jewelry — especially hoops, bangles, and long link necklaces — is certain to put a smile on her face quicker than discounted electronics she won’t use until she reads the directions, which she may not… sheepishly, I admit I still have a MP3 player unopened from last Christmas. Earrings, no instructions needed!

Stretching your wardrobe, check! Giving a useful and sentimental gift, check! And, could you believe benefiting a charity, too? More manufacturers and retailers are giving shoppers a means to pay it forward by donating a percentage of the proceeds of a sale for a particular item to a worthy cause. By seeking out such products you’re giving in more than one way, which is really what the season is all about.

So, as you surf the pages of JFYI, consider our suggestions to make this season a little brighter. We invite you to blog or email us with some of your ideas and stories, too, because it takes a village, bigger than the North Pole, to make some real holiday magic happen.

Adorningly Yours,
